What
is presbyopia ?
Presbyopia is the optical condition in which, due to the aging process,
we loose the power to focus (accommodation) on near objects, and thus
loosing near sight. It generally appears within the age of 40 and 45.
What are the symptoms ?
Its initial symptoms are clearly differentiated: we can't focus on near
objects and we need to move apart of reading materials.
How can it be corrected?
There are optical and surgical methods to correct presbyopia. In the former
we can find monofocal, bifocal and multifocal spectacles or contact lenses.
Surgical methods can be intra or extraocular, in the former an intraocular
lens is implanted inside the eye in the latter an ablation is performed
by a laser.
Which is better, the intraocular lens or the laser surgery?
It depends on age, previous defect and the eye lens condition.
Who can be under this surgery?
Every person that has presbyopia. If the patients also has myopia, hyperopia
or astigmatism it is necessary to re-evaluate the case. In same cases
you can first have a lasik surgery to correct the defects and then go
under the presbyopia surgery.
Since what age you can go under this surgery?
Presbyopia appears at the age of 40 so is not necessary to get operated
before that age.
Up to what age I can get operated?
There isn't a clear limit. It depends on the eye condition
Does this surgery require hospital stay?
No, it is ambulatory
What kind of anesthesia is used?
Topical (drops)
How long does the surgery lasts?
10 minutes
How is the postoperatory?
It is painless.
After the surgery, how long do I have to wait to improve my
near vision?
The patient starts to see near objects after 24 hs. Nevertheless it is
necessary to wait 3 to 7 days to get a real improvement in near vision
Does this surgery compromises far vision?
This technique never compromises far vision
How long does the effect of this operation lasts?
It lasts approximately 5 years. We don't have to forget that presbyopia
is always in evolution.
Is this surgery painful?
No it is not
Can I have surgery in both eyes simultaneously?
Yes
After the surgery, is it necessary to continue the use of spectacles?
